Burnout has been classified as a psychosocial hazard. There is focus on burnout and high level recommendations to addressing it in the WorkSafe psychosocial hazard documentation. What Revive Coaching has identified is that there needs to be focus on the link between the external factors contributing to burnout (which often includes the workplace environment, processes and systems) and the internal factors inherent to the individual. Revive Coaching specialises in the link between the employer and employee AND on the internal factors inherent to the individual.
As mentioned, burnout is considered a grey area in that it is multifaceted and insidious. It impacts every part of the individual’s life. There are many layers to its prevention and recovery – with each being unique to the individual. Hence, there is no one size fits all approach. A focused and tender plan needs to be implemented to support and guide burnt out employees back to full health so that they can thrive in career and in life in a sustainable way.
Revive Coaching provides holistic support spanning the five planes: physical, mental, emotional, spiritual and energetic. We work with the business by identifying ways they can support the individual by way of the environment. What makes Revive Coaching unique is the support provided to the individual and facilitation of how the business and the individual can align better and have exemplary results for both parties.
Each of us has developmental trauma and conditioning. This is part of our human experience. This contributes to an individual’s survival (coping) strategies. Survival strategies limit the individual’s progress and can become detrimental to their health if they are not acknowledged. Common survival strategies associated with burnout include perfectionism, over-functioning, over-achieving and people-pleasing.
Revive Coaching assists individuals with replacing these survival strategies with healthier alternatives to enable to individual to flourish and grow into their next phase. Updating of old survival strategies allows individuals to experience greater freedoms, perceive expansive opportunities and enjoy wider expressions of their views.

I have lived experience of end-stage burnout and can relate to individuals along the burnout spectrum. The circumstances which contributed to my first and second burnout episodes were different which allows me to relate to burnt out employees on various levels. What most people don’t know about burnout is that it can be an incredibly lonely, shameful, overwhelming and an exhausting place for someone to be. Having someone who has been through it makes all the difference to someone’s starting point and ongoing motivation. It can encourage internal narratives like, “If she can do it, so can I”.
My coaching presence is gentle yet firm. I am easily able to connect with others and foster a sense of trust. Burnout sufferers want to know that they are not alone. I take my time to get to know my clients as a true connection facilitates greater healing. By having a consistent approach and constant guiding presence is also beneficial for maintaining that connection and accelerating recovery.
I gradually titrate and move a dysregulated nervous system back into a state of regulation. This is a skill that the employee will gradually learn for themselves as part of their recovery. I understand their nervous system state and am aware of how much and how quickly to progress their recovery without it becoming overwhelming.
Often there is a sense of shame with burnout, so having someone who is external to the organization can help with the sense of distance and confidentiality. Where I differ from Employee Assistance Programs (EAP), counseling and others in addition to being separate from the organisation and creating a sense of safety– is that I have walked this path before and intimately know each stage and how to progress through it. This matters for true healing and recovery as the employee will not feel that their perceived vulnerabilities are being judged, their chances of career progression are being jeopardised or assistance in this matter being disclosed to colleagues. Being a coach, I guide clients with goal-setting and transformational growth. This goes hand in hand with accountability. Having an accountability partner strongly encourages employees to practice the techniques in real time and between sessions for integration, assistance with challenges they may encounter, and for cementing in a sound foundation upon which to build the subsequent skills for recovery. The strategies I use with my clients are also different compared with traditional therapy (using a medical model or talk therapy).
